We are so grateful to Sacred Collective for hosting community events like this upcoming screening of Robert Hilferty’s 24-minute documentary “Stop the Church”, chronicling events leading up to and including the December 10, 1989 demonstration by the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) and Women’s Health and Mobilization (WHAM!) at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC.

ACT UP originated this demonstration to protest Cardinal John O’Connor’s opposition to the teaching of safer sex in the public school system and WHAM! supported because of the Church’s opposition to abortion access.

One of the most valuable reasons to watch this screening in community is the documentation not only of the demonstration but also the planning.

We look forward to a robust discussion to follow moderated by Andrés Restrepo-Sánchez and a panel including Dr. Anna Blaedel and David Weldon.

We offer this community event in honor of the 56th anniversary of the for formation of the Gay Liberation Front in Iowa City, the first gay organization to be officially recognized as a student group by a state university.

After the GLF was no longer allowed to meet on campus, they found a home at what is now known as Sacred Collective.
